About Us

Kathak Yatra is a dance Institute for Kathak , an Indian classical dance form, emphasizing on the traditions developed in northern states of India.

Established in the year 2017, by Smt. Anu Shinai with a focus on imparting training in the field of Kathak and associated disciplines.
It is dedicated to the education, promotion and preservation of Kathak dance and classical Indian art and culture.

Students of all ages undergo extensive training in technique, rhythmical math (ताल), command over music beats (लय), rhythmic patterns of footwork (तत्कार), facial expressions (अभिनय),  along with in-depth knowledge of theory, improvisation, storytelling, classical Indian music, Indian history, philosophy and etiquette. Through this training students develop discipline, awareness, focus, respect, character, self grooming, correct posture, body fitness and overall life training.

We offer formal examinations upto Alankaar (Masters) in Kathak, including theory & practical dance performance, with affiliation from an Indian university – Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Miraj.

We focus on intensive dance and music immersion programs, annual student performances, teacher training and an opportunity for youth to be part of its elite pre & post professional Kathak programs at prestigious festivals and venues worldwide.

About: Smt. Anu Shinai

Smt. ​Anu Shinai, a Kathak dancer from Mumbai, India, started her training in Kathak dance at the age of ten, from renowned Kathak Guru, Late. Smt. Asha Joglekar from the institute of Archana Nrityalaya.
She is a Kathak Alankaar Poorna (Post Graduate/MA) from Akhil Bhartiya Gandharv Mahavidyalay Mandaal, a university based in India.
Anu has evolved a unique personal style based on blending the plus points of all three Gharanas – Lucknow, Jaipur and Banaras. With teachings from her Guru & Kathak workshops attended of famous Kathak exponents; she was blessed to learn the powerful tatkar & chakri of Jaipur, nazakat, beauty of body movements, gat-nikas, finishes of the todas of Lucknow and powerful natwari bol, pakhawaj ke bol, tukde and paran of Banaras, which were then all combined into a complete style in itself by putting lot of creative thought and detailing.A hardworking choreographer, a dynamic teacher and an engaging performer. Anu strives to create art that reflects her cultural influences.
She gave her first performance at the young age of ten and after that there was no looking back. She has won several awards during school and college tenure. She has been giving a series of solo and group dance performances including Kathak, Bollywood, Lawani and Folk at various events and festivals worldwide.

Accolades:

  • She has won many prizes in solo & group dance competitions of ISKCON, ‘Nrityanjali Fest’, ‘Tarang Fest’, Inter College Fest ‘Jashn-E-Rizvi’ of Rizvi College, Maratha Mandir-Kala Kendra (state level competition), etc.
  • She has also performed in ‘Romeo- Juliet’ Dance Ballet held in various cities choreographed & directed by Guru Sashwati Sen & Pt.Birju Maharaj’s Dance Troupe.
  • She has performed in Jhalak Dikhlaja TV dance show along with Madhuri Dixit & Pt.Birju Maharaj.
  • She has attended workshop, ’Kathak Darpan’ held by Pt. Birju Maharaj every year since Yr. 2000 & with his blessings been fortunate to learn Lukhnow Gharana dance style.
  • Performed in dance ballet, ‘Dashavtar’ with dance troupe of Guru Asha Joglekar & multiple shows of dance ballet ‘Jayshankara Vidyadhara’ – famous Lok Natya of Shri Vidyadhar Gokhale; dance choreographed by Smt. Smriti Talpade.
  • She has performed in group dance on a live singing concert, by Shankar Mahadevan for MNS – Raj Tahakre.
  • She has performed for TV Channel Sahyadri Hirkani Awards. She has been a part of the group dance in a song of movie ‘Married to America’ produced by DNA Movies USA with actor & Guru Archana Joglekar & Jackie Shroff.
  • She has directed, choreographed, organized & performed a Kathak ballet – ‘Vibgyor’ – a tribute to her Guru Asha Joglekar.
  • Choreographed successful theme based dance performance for nursery children for Middle East Nursery School at Muscat, Oman.
  • She has also worked as a Kathak dance teacher at Archana Nrityalaya, dance school founded by Guru Smt. Asha Joglekar, for around 3 years. With blessings of her Guru she will continue to perform & teach the art of Kathak dance to further generations.
